This is going to be a very detailed and complete guide on SEO title making. In this one post, you are going to learn the most of the good parts of title making.

You did hate it right? So let’s get deep into this. We are about to discuss the following things:

What is a title?

Basically, the title tag defines the heading or just name the page of your site.

It is defined in the head section of your page as. As an example, let us take a post from

<title>Installing Java on your system | Fuddlepixel</title>

This is intended to be seen as browser’s title for your page, distinguishing the page for you.

Even though this seems like its just a name, for search engines, this becomes an important parameter. After all, this is the title which a searching user would be clicking.

Don’t be confused with headings. The headings you provide for your webpage (with <h1> … etc) don’t have as much importance as titles. Because titles become the primary identity of your web page.

So the title is consumed by search engines as well.

Hence we can see that title works like a two edge sword when it comes to SEO.

  1. Users click your links by reading the title.
  2. Therefore search engines use titles to rank them for keywords.

Why titles matter for SEO

Let me show you here. Which one are you going to click:

  • Free yoga lessons
  • How to lose weight in 30 days? This free yoga lesson is for you!

Even though both are free. Or what about…

  • Learn meditation
  • Learn meditation in a minute with this simple trick!

You already know which one is inspiring. Many people think let’s go straight forward, but it doesn’t work these days.

On the internet, people do judge things by its cover! And it is simply so true because content providers like you and me are not the only ones out there. On a search engine, when they search for something, they are bombarded with tons of results.

Users literally have no option but to scan, not read, the list. It’s just like their eyes falls on a title that looks cooler to them for a moment and then clicks.

Focus on keyword

As people scans the internet, and not read, they actually scan for what they are searching for.

Let me show you an example. Suppose I am about to search for:

  • learn meditation

And a user scanning for this list:

  • Learn meditation in 6 easy steps
  • Find peace with by doing this.
  • A beginner’s guide to spiritual wisdom
  • Can I learn meditation on my own
  • meditation 101: A beginner’s how to
  • Relax your mind by doing these 4 things
  • Meditation for beginners
  • The most important Buddhist Practice
  • How to learn meditation fast

Even though all of the links will eventually help you to learn meditation, well looking at them, nobody can be sure what it is going to teach.

The thing is, nobody would bother spending time finding out which seems to be a better lesson for meditation. The user will only scan the result list for what exactly his mind is focusing on. The keyword, meditation.

And second thing is that these titles if ever read, will obviously be read from the beginning. So if they find the keyword in the beginning, then it would be a better chance. This is called as front loading. This mostly produces positive results.

Hence we get two lessons here,

  1. Find the relevant 2 or 3 keywords for your content. Think as what the user will put in the search bar to fall on my link.
  2. Try to put those keywords in the beginning.

Suppose if somebody from some ExampleBlog is about to write an article on yoga lesson, then being specific on the topic, about what can be provided and what users might seek we come to this:

  • yoga
  • one month strategy
  • mainly for men
  • burn fat fast

It is obvious that people won’t be searching for “one month” or “fast” or “strategies”. Hence they cannot be called keywords.

The primary keyword here would be yoga, secondary men. And people might be focus on burn fat.

Then a good SEO optimized title can be made as

  • One month yoga strategy for men to burn fat fast! — ExampleBlog [Looks cool!]

It is important to know that this keyword strategy provides most benefits if those same keywords are repeated again and again in the content itself.

It is okay to come up with a title with a few keywords. 2 or 3 at the max. But never do keyword stuffing. It is a bad practice. Abusing a list of keywords would not help to rank anywhere. Besides, both search engines and users find it abusing too.

Be sure to have 2 or 3 keywords at max, and the content has exact same relevant content about them. More focus is much better.

How long a title should be?

Well having a very large title will do no good. Neither users would engage reading them, nor the search engine would destroy their link listing experience.

The optimal length for a title is considered to be between 50 to 60 characters.

The reason is that any extra letters will get truncated!

If you go for an extra long :

  • A one month full free yoga strategy for men to burn their belly fat faster! — ExampleBlog [It’s too long!]

Then for a lot of search engines and browsers, depending on the reading size, it might become

  • A one month full free yoga strategy for men to burn their … — ExampleBlog [bad Idea!]

Hence keeping short and to the keywords titles are the best thing to do.

Branding with titles

To help people distinguish the results, search engine often provides them branding information, that is, the publisher or the site which is hosting that article.

Showing your brand does leverage results. If people who are searching to know about your brand, they will surely make to check your link out.

If you have a Meditation for beginners post on your site at, then Google might automatically show it as:

  • Meditation for beginners — ExampleBlog

If you don’t do the branding, Google will do. Because it is supposed to be already there.

For, you can check the source code, the title is set as:

<title>Welcome | Fuddlepixel</title>

So it should be showing:

  • Welcome | Fuddlepixel

But the results are quite different!

You find the difference?

  • Welcome | Fuddlepixel
  • Fuddlepixel: Welcome

Hence it is always a good thing to add custom branding on your own within your titles with a cool separator.

For example,

  • Meditation for beginners · ExampleBlog Lessons

I prefer to use this: | as they look thinner, but dash - and middot · are also used a lot.

Titles that inspires!

Having just a title with a few keywords might be good technically but not for users. They want to find information, not your keywords actually.

Design Titles for Humans. Not Bots!

The titles should have emotional values. They should be inspiring enough to be clicked.

The following are certain things you can add to make your title look inspiring:

  1. Numbers: It is always great to add numbers. “7 methods to …”, “31 tips …”
  2. Depth and Breadth: Using words like “detailed”, “complete”, “brief”.
  3. Time required: This would break quality vs quantity confusion! “Fast”, “… today”, “in a month!”.
  4. Identity: To promote something, in a particular location or field “… in Newyork”, “.. of MTV”.
  5. Freshness: People want the latest and updated information. So add “Updated …”, “best of 2018”, “This December”.

Basically, we are doing all this to find long tail variations of your title.

Check this out for example:

  • BASIC: learn meditation
  • Long tailed #1: learn meditation for beginners
  • Long tailed #2: 7 day meditation lesson plan
  • Long tailed #3: meditation classes in Nepal

Following the above tips can be tried and tested. I am 100% positive these would yield great results for your upcoming content.

What about the already published posts?

Well, it’s no problem. As long as the URL of your page/post remains same, you can change the <title> right now and see for your own what happens.

The bottom line is, stop depending on SEO.

If your content is made to help others, people will love it, and they will share it. That would be the actual promotion. If people admire your content, that’s the biggest ranking of all in my view. Anyways, I also understand the practicality of brandings there for I end up writing this!
